Priest Spell Lists
Priest Spell Lists
Priests are simply granted their spells by a higher power, the mana they wield is filtered by the power of a supreme entity before being bestowed upon them and spells are not memorized in a fashion familiar to wizards. Instead of understanding cryptic formulae, gestures and words of power, a priest executes spells through the power of faith alone. This is not to say that the spells and their purposes are not studied by priests, but rather that such study is more like the study of a religious text and prayers on how and when to access such power. While faith cannot be effectively measured as a stat, for the purposes of game mechanics a priest’s Wisdom stats are key in determining how much divine power a priest can tap. The Intuition sub-stat represents a priest’s insight into the ethos of his deity and for game purposes translates into setting the upper limit of capacity for the number of spells that can be known at each spell level
Spell Spheres
There are three spheres or groupings of spell power within priestly or divine magic. The first is the Minor Sphere which encompasses all 1st^ 3rd^ level spells. The second is the Median Sphere, encompassing 4th-6th^ and finally Major Sphere for 7th-9th. The spheres of power are separated by the relative strength of the magic
Humber of Spells
The Intuition score provides the base for a maximum number of spells that a priest can know of a particular spell level. For Minor Sphere magic priests may gain up to their Intuition score worth of spells for all minor sphere levels. For Median sphere spells reduces that number by two (i.e. – a priest with 18 intuition has a maximum of 16 spells level four through six) while Major sphere spells are reduced by an additional two (i.e. – the same priest would have a maximum of 14 spells level seven through nine.) A major difference between wizards and priests however is that upon attaining a new spell level in priest, the priest is divinely filled with the new power as long as the DM determines that the priest is following the path of their chosen deity
Priests gain new spells at the following levels:
1st Level Priest | 1st Level Spells | 9th Level Priest | 5th Level Spells |
3rd Level Priest | 2nd Level Spells | 12th Level Priest | 6th Level Spells |
5th Level Priest | 3rd Level Spells | 14th Level Priest | 7th Level Spells |
7th Level Priest | 4th Level Spells | 16th Level Priest | 8th Level Spells |
18th Level Priest | 9th Level Spells |
Assigning Spells for Priests
Priests may only learn spells associated with their deity’s domains or spheres of influence. Each deity has a fairly large number of domains associated with them and subsequently, the priestly orders generally have a subset of these domains available to them. As a general rule of thumb, a priest order will have access to around seven domains plus the All domain. Additionally a priest order should have access to a nominal number of special spells. The special spells should be assigned automatically and then either the DM or the player should pick a minimum of one spell from each of the specified domains and at least one from the All domain then fill out the remainder of allowed spells from those specified domains or the All domain according to the character’s concept. If a situation arises where a priest gains all spells from all specified domains and still has slots to fill, the DM should approve concept appropriate spells from the deity’s domain list. All spell selections should be validated by the DM
